The Perfect Introduction To Philadelphia

First things first, if you are in Philly you NEED to have an authentic Philly cheesesteak. Make Pat's or Gino's your first port of call in the city (both sit on the same street and both claim to be the original makers of the Philly cheesesteak so take your pick! Personally I prefer Pat's).

Done? Good. Glad we got that out of the way. Consider your life now changed.

Next up, it's time to burn off some of those cheesesteak calories by re-enacting that famous Rocky scene and run up the steps to the Museum of Art (bonus points for singing Eye Of The Tiger on the way up!) before yelling "Adriaaaaaaan" at the top of your lungs.

Take your time in Philly as an opportunity to brush up on your American History and pay a visit to the Liberty Bell (but be warned, the line for this is always ridiculously long) and Independence Hall.

For those of you that don't know, Independence Hall is where the Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776 which meant that America was no longer under British rule. It's pretty cool to stand there knowing you are in the same place as a major turning point as American history, you know, if you like that kind of thing.

If you need to get out of the city centre and slow the pace down a tad, one of Philly's local parks is sure to do the trick. LOVE park sits bang in the middle of central Philadelphia but still manages to offer the peace and tranquility that comes with spending a day lost in nature. Think Central Park but on a smaller scale.

Fancy mixing a history lesson with a dash of supernatural? Visit Eastern State Penitentiary. Once home to inmates like Al Capone, ESP was at one point the most expensive prison in the world. If you are visiting in autumn they put on a seriously spooky haunted house. Don't forget to get your picture taken behind bars to remember the occassion!

Want a bit more historical immersion? You can take a guided tour around the home of Benjamin Franklin and when you've done all of these things, have another Philly cheesesteak - perhaps from the rival store so you can make an informed decision of which is better!
